NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – Emergency crews responded to a significant fire at the Newport Landing Apartments on J. Clyde Morris Blvd. Saturday morning, marking the second fire incident at the property within the past week.

According to the Newport News Fire Department, the blaze was reported at approximately 8:00 a.m. on May 30. Upon arrival, firefighters encountered heavy smoke emanating from the apartment building and immediately initiated a 2-alarm response.

Crews performed an aggressive interior attack, utilizing multiple handlines to battle the flames, while simultaneously conducting vertical ventilation operations to contain the fire and improve conditions within the structure.

Impact and Response The fire affected eight units within the apartment building. While no injuries to civilians or firefighters have been reported, officials confirmed that a pet dog died in the incident. The Red Cross is currently on-site providing assistance to the displaced residents.

Ongoing Investigation Authorities are currently investigating the cause of the fire. Notably, the Newport News Fire Department is examining whether this incident is related to a previous fire at the same building on May 25, which was determined to have been caused by unattended cooking.
