Mother Charged Following Death of 5-Year-Old Boy
NEWPORT NEWS, Va. – A Newport News community is mourning after authorities announced that a mother has been charged in connection with the death of her 5-year-old son, who passed away earlier this week following a medical emergency.
Newport News Police were dispatched to a residence in the 300 block of Walden Pond Court at approximately 2:19 p.m. on Thursday, July 16, 2026, after receiving reports of an unresponsive child. Upon arrival, first responders and medical personnel performed life-saving measures on the scene before rushing the boy to a local hospital.
Despite the efforts of medical staff, the child succumbed to his injuries later that evening.
Following an autopsy conducted by the Office of the Medical Examiner, officials determined the cause of death to be internal injuries resulting from blunt force trauma. The incident is currently being investigated as a homicide.
Authorities have taken the child's mother into custody and have filed charges, including second-degree murder, in connection with the case. As the investigation remains active, police have not released further details regarding the specific circumstances surrounding the child's injuries.
